Karen is registered in Australia to practice physiotherapy as well as acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. She is therefore skilled in treating chronic pain and conditions that show little response to more conventional physiotherapy. By combining gentle manual osteopathic techniques such as Craniosacral Therapy and Muscle Energy Technique, originating in the USA, (Phil Greenman DO, Michigan State University) with acupuncture and Chinese herbs a more holistic approach to the management of pain is incorporated.

Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral therapy is very soothing and relaxing and treats restrictions to the rhythm or movement of the cranial bones as cerebrospinal fluid is circulated throughout the central nervous system. Craniosacral therapy can be used with acupuncture and is very effective in the treatment of headaches, migraines and TMJ problems.

Muscle Energy Technique

Muscle Energy technique is a very gentle but precise method of treatment that works via the neurological system to reset the resting length of muscles. Adverse tension in a muscle group can produce a detrimental change to the biomechanical function of the joint crossed by those muscles. By eliciting a gentle voluntary contraction of the muscles against a counter force, the normal biomechanics at the articulation can be reestablished.

Muscle Energy has many clinical uses and is very good at treating neck and lumbosacral pain and dysfunction. It can be used alone or in conjunction with acupuncture or Bowen Technique to achieve a more profound effect on the area.
