Traditional Chinese medicine

Traditional Chinese medicine also known simply as Chinese medicine, or Oriental medicine, is the name commonly given to a range of traditional medical practices that originated in China approximately 2500 years ago. It incorporates the practice of acupuncture, moxibustion, herbal or botanical medicine, nutritional therapeutics, massage and various forms of exercise including tai qi and qi gong.

All these techniques have been meticulously studied and refined since their inception providing a comprehensive health management system that is an excellent compliment to our current allopathic medical model. To put it simply the strength of Oriental medicine is in maintaining the equilibrium of health and wellness. Western medicine excels in cases of emergency or crisis situations where the balance of health has been lost. When both systems are used hand in hand people have access to a well-rounded framework of health services to meet their healthcare needs.

Chinese medicine can be helpful in many conditions ranging from the common cold to more serious digestive, respiratory, cardiovascular, psychological, neurological, gynecological disorders and fertility issues.

Other benefits of Oriental medicine include stress reduction, immune enhancement, improved sleep, pain relief and increased energy. This is due to its holistic approach. The person is seen as one energic system, with treatment aimed at the root of the problem. Symptoms often present as part of a diagnostic pattern. With treatment aimed at correcting the primary dysfunction rather than relieving a particular symptom, several complaints can be treated at once.

For example, deficiency of true or zhen qi can manifest in a number of ways. Fatigue and lethargy, headaches, diarrhea, excessive sweating and premenstrual syndrome just to name a few. If this person seeks Oriental medicine to treat the diarrhea, by treating the underlying cause of the loose stools, the true qi deficiency, the other symptoms will also improve or resolve. This result is far more satisfactory for this person than simply being given an anti - diarrhea medication that works on the symptom of diarrhea only.
