Contemporary Chinese Pulse Diagnosis

Contemporary Chinese Pulse diagnosis represents the combined work of Dr John F Shen OMD and Dr Leon Hammer MD. This system of pulse diagnosis was brought from China to the USA by Dr Shen in 1971. Based on the clinical findings from their numerous treatments they refined and further developed this model by documenting pulse readings that were repeatedly found in patients with similar problems. The resulting method allows access to a reliable source of diagnostic information from a patient that is relevant to our modern times and current diseases.

During his 30-year apprenticeship with Dr Shen, Dr Hammer documented this method of evaluating the radial pulse. Chinese Pulse Diagnosis, A contemporary Approach, published by Eastland Press, provides a comprehensive description of this method.

Contemporary Chinese Pulse Diagnosis provides the practitioner with detailed information about the health of a patient. Detailed knowledge is gained from the 6 principal positions and 22 complimentary positions that each represents the functioning of different organs and areas of the body. This information is important in formulating the diagnosis and selecting the best combination of both acupuncture points and herbs to treat the condition.

All internal medicine problems that are treated by acupuncture and Chinese medicine at Lotus Healing Arts use this method of pulse evaluation. The entire pulse reading takes approximately 45 minutes and usually takes place on the initial session. It gives important insight into the state of organ health, emotional and psychological functioning, and areas that are of concern for future health.

Karen started her study of Contemporary Chinese Pulse Diagnosis in 1998 and has spent over 500 hours under the direct guidance of Dr Hammer. She has been certified as an instructor by Dr Hammer since 2003 and currently teaches Contemporary Chinese Pulse diagnosis to practitioners of Oriental medicine in the New York City area.
