The descriptions of energetic patterns in Oriental medicine are akin to descriptions of climates in nature. As in nature heat rises, cold contracts, damp is heavy and moist, and dry is devoid of fluids, in Oriental medicine hot conditions tend to affect the upper part of the body, cold conditions tend to slow movement of energy, damp may creates sluggishness or discharges, and dryness may manifest as dry eyes, mouth or throat. There is no separation of body and mind in Chinese Medicine. Emotional and mental patterns may often be alleviated.
Asking, Looking, Feeling, Listening.
Asking involves questions about medical history, digestion and eating habits, sleep patterns, pain, eliminations, and menstruation in women.
Looking involves an assessment of the tongue, eyes, facial and body characteristics. The shape, color, and coating of the tongue gives a description of internal energetic balance. For example a thick coating may be a sign of sluggish digestion, or a bright red tongue tip a sign of poor sleep.
Feeling involves an assessment of the radial pulse as well as muscle tone. The rate, and quality of the pulse gives a details picture of your current energetic pattern as well as historical health information. The practitioners of Lotus Healing Arts use Dr Shen's pulse system as taught by Dr Leon Hammer.
Listening gives information based on tone of voice as well as the answers to the questions in Asking, above. |
