What is Bowen Technique
Bowen Technique is a bodywork system developed by Tom Bowen in Australia in the 1950's. It a series of gentle physical inputs applied at specific points on the body. Looking structurally, the moves are done across muscle tendon junctions, muscle bellies, ligaments, nerves and occasionally joints. Most of the moves are a perpendicular pressure at these points, held and then released in a way that gives the signal to the neurological system to reset the structures to their correct resting length and position. The Bowen moves also encourage dehydration of connective tissue.
Bowen developed a combination of moves that can reset the resting length of most of the muscles of the postural system of the lower, upper back and neck in about twenty minutes. Additionally removing fascial restrictions, rehydrate connective tissue, promoting proper visceral function and balancing of the autonomic nervous system through an increase in parasympathetic function. As a result Bowen technique is deeply relaxing.
Each set of moves is applied in groups of two to ten at a time. The client is then allowed a short break, while the body assimilates the changes, before the next set of moves are applied. The work is applied from the center of the body out. As there are breaks in the application of the work, it is possible to work with several people at once, effectively and easily. Most sessions use the core procedures of lower, upper back and neck and shoulders, (which includes hamstrings, vastus lateralis, ITB, spinal erectors, scalenes, traps, levator scapulae, rhomboids, splenius capitus.) and then peripheral procedures are added based on symptomatology and structural symmetry.
Most first session only use the lower, upper back and neck and shoulders no matter what a person presents with. This combination is a full body balancing procedure and will change most conditions positively. A second and third session may add more procedures depending on the changes that have occurred from the first session.
As structure governs function, once the musculature is reset, subluxed joints correct themselves (there is no contact with the spine), viscera functions properly and fluids circulate properly.
Procedures include TMJ, Frozen Shoulder, carpal tunnel, elbow, asthma, pelvic realignment, knee, ankle, bunion, hamstrings, sacrum, coccyx etc. Combinations of these procedures can be used to improve any condition.
It is safe on any one of any age or health status and is very effective with pregnancy back pain. As the improvements come from the body making intrinsic changes, they tend to happen quickly and more importantly are long lasting.
Diagnostics is simple and application is non intrusive. The work is almost always done through clothes (thin, loose) and is gentle enough to use on extreme cases of fibromyalgia with few problems and still with positive results. Ross worked in a pain specialty medical center in NYC for a number of years under several doctors. There he had the opportunity to treat many chronic and severe conditions ranging from ankylosing spondylitis and Lyme disease to recent severe trauma. |
